Reflection

     Overall this Project was a success. I conveyed my theme in a very good looking and professional manner, using the darkness of the block print to my advantage. I successfully used line in a similar fashion as my inspiration as well as space. I put my ideas onto paper successfully and made a nice looking piece in the end, and planned it very intricately as well. The block printing process was an easy process for me and didn't cause me too much of a challenge when building my project. Overall the piece was nice, reflecting my theme well and the process was simple and tangible.

Experimentation

Connection to the ACT

1) My inspiration caused my work to have its deep scratchy background. It also caused the darkness I have to my piece with the main themes being a sadder theme. 

2) The artist that made my inspiration wanted to depict death and sadness through her work and show deep poverty and sorrow.

3) I have learned a lot about German culture in WW2 and the struggles many people have gone through. I learned a lot about the artist herself and all the tragedies that have happened to her as well. I generally assumed that this time period wasn't the happiest time for people living in this area specifically. 

4) The main theme surrounding my inspiration is sorrow and loss, but an overall acceptance of the tragedies. 

5) I have inferred that Kathe Kollwitz had a very tough and tragic life but worked through it all and had to still make work despite all this. Her work was mostly destroyed in a bombing, and she was forced to resign from her art organization but none of this stopped her from making art.

Exhibition Text

For this piece I wanted to make something to represent myself and my journey and I found Kathe Kollwitz perfect for my project. Her dark scratchy style fit perfectly into the block print style. I used her self-portrait piece as in inspiration aesthetically, with similar backgrounds as well as figure and movement of the piece. i made my piece very dark representing self-destruction and the general vibe is similarly very sad and gloomy.

Research

     My inspiration artist was Kathe Kollwitz and her art usually revolved around darker and sadder themes as the time frame of her art was in world war two, a very dark time period especially for someone from Germany. Her art was a bright spot for her and was a good place to shift her focus from the sadness around her. 
     She was always a supporter of human rights and freedoms and her environment in the war allowed her to grow her perspectives on the topics. She used her art to advocate for many things, having the first-hand experience on human rights and unfair treatment of people in Berlin as her husband was a doctor in a working-class area of Berlin. She experienced poverty in Germany and saw its effects on people, which affected her art deeply. 
     She was the first female member of the Prussian Academy of the Arts but was forced to resign when the Nazi's came to power in Germany. She suffered many losses to her already sad life as well. Her youngest son died in the war in 1914 and that is mainly what began her cycle of unfortunate events. He husband died in 1940 and her grandson died in battle in WW2 in 1942. Her house and studio were bombed near Dresden in 1943 destroying much of her life work. She began a series called Death around this time depicting the depression and grief all around her. She ended up dying 3 weeks before the end of the war.
     Her death series which came at the end of her life was a series made up of lithographs. Lithography is s process using a metal or stone plate and printing on it using oil and water. She wanted others to understand her experience and perspective on death as she did. All her tragedies in life made her closer and closer to death and allowed her to understand how close it really was. Death was constantly going for people in Kathe's life and she displayed that in death grabbing for her loved ones.
     Kathe Kollwitz worked hard in her life to achieve her dreams but was slowed down by many tragedies. She is an example that hard work doesn't always lead to success. Despite much of her life work being destroyed by bombings, she is still one of the most famous and recognizable modern artists. She worked through all these heartbreaking events and just kept pushing until she was near her death. Knowing she was nearing death her art really started revolving this and her last few art pieces were very dark especially her death series. 
      

Process, Ideas, and Intentions

     This project taught me a lot and helped me sharpen many different skills overall. I learned mainly the block print process and how to make a block print. This process wasn't too difficult for me and I didn't have too many low points. One thing I had to go back and revise was my print itself. My scratched weren't deep enough and I had to go back and carve out bigger pieces so the ink would be more evident on the print. My carving was quite well done in the end and my piece looked very similar to my intended drawing.

     My intention with this block print was to show one's self-destruction and how one's biggest enemy is himself. After seeing Kathe Kollowitz's self-portrait with her hand on her face that gave me the idea of one hurting himself metaphorically. I wanted to show how nothing happens for no reason and tragedy is caused by one's own actions. This relates to students and people my age as they are growing and becoming adults. By learning to have responsibilities and take care of themselves they must also learn to make the right choices and that some choices may cause self-destruction. 

     To make my project similar to Kathe Kollowitz's work, I ensured that my project had a deep and dark aspect to it. I made the scratches surrounding the head of the main figure to show destruction that descending on the person and through the reaction of the figure seems to be inevitable. I made many scratched move onto the figure as well, seemingly crawling onto him like insects taking over him. I made the main figure without eyes and covered them with scratches showing his unawareness to his destruction. 

His hand is on his face and the shadow taking over his face shows how he hurts himself and the shadow is his actions taking over him, slowly consuming what remains of his figure. 

     My work overall was a success in presenting my intended idea. The darkness successfully represented my inspiration and my intention as well. My figure was well carved and well printed onto the sheet. The hand on the face was perfectly printed as well showing the destruction and covering the face just enough to show the shadow on the face as well. Some ways I could have improved in my piece was the placement of the hand, as I could have made it more comfortable for the figure. I also could have made his neck thicker to make him look more realistic. 

     The work of my inspiration was very well done, although it was a similar medium. She also used scratches to make the piece and make it come together better. She covered the piece well with shadow and made it visible as well as dark. It did well to represent her theme through the darkness of the piece. The character seems to be damaged as well as parts of the face are not visible or seem to be scratched away such as her left eye. 

     Originally I had the idea of isolation that I wanted to put into a piece. I was planning on making a piece set out on a stage. My inspiration was The last supper and I would use the same background set-up as the piece to display my stage, with a similar concept of distance perception. I would put a singular figure in the center of the piece with his arms laid out unmoving next to him and strings attached to his arms moving up into the top of the piece. His body would be laid out like a puppet or a dead body with its only consciousness being the strings connecting the figure to the stage. I wanted to also add a shepherd cane reaching for the puppet as well, ready to remove him from the stage, a classic theatrical gig popular in many old plays or projects. The piece wouldn't work out for many reasons. Mainly the carving technique used to make a block print wouldn't work with the very intricate and thin lines I would use in this piece. Secondly, this piece required more colors to convey the story more meaningfully and the black and white colors of the block print wouldn't have done too well in this cause. I decided to put the idea off to the side to be used in another project later on.
