Process, Ideas, and Intentions

While working on the project I learned many new things along the way and changed my plans a few times as well. At first my idea was to make the whole set look like a prison as well as a living room. I used modelling clay bought from Walmart to build the couch and covered it in red fabric from Dollar Tree. I used excess clay from the couch to make a pillow for the couch. I bought a large 1 foot by 1 foot Square piece of foam from Walmart to use as the base and bought an actual 4 foot by 10 inch piece of carpet from Dollar tree and trimmed it to fit onto the piece of foam as carpeting for the ground. I bought 2 round pieces of foam from Walmart as well and used one of them as an overthrown table lying on the ground. I used a toothpick to prop up the table to look like it had a broken leg and was throw over. I bought plastic flowers and nail polish from dollar tree as well. I emptied the bottle of Nail polish and picked off two flowers and placed them into the bottle to look like a vase. I found random pieces of attire from a barbie set in my home, and placed them around the room to show that humans lived there and to add to the chaos in the piece.

I originally wanted to make the whole set look like a prison. I wanted to get dish silk metal to wrap around the set like a chain-link fence. I would have made a family of people out of skeletons to represent how the media and television has taken away people interest in real life. I would have made these people out of Popsicle sticks or toothpicks. I would have carved a Television for the set out of foam and placed it on a TV stand across from the family. I would have placed a vinyl video reel across the television and displayed static on it to represent the nonsense that is depicted on social media today. The room would have been very well organized to represent a well off family home, but trapped and very confined by the fence that would wrap around. This Idea didn't work because I didn't have access to all these materials and couldn't access to them in time.

My work is a nice piece but I believe it could go through some improvements. If I had all the proper materials I would change up the piece a bit, specifically by changing the carpet to a softer and cleaner looking piece, also making it easier to cut through. I would have made better lighting for the piece, if I had access to actual set lights, but my lamp did its work in my final piece wither way. I would have set up a surrounding background for the piece that would overlap the whole piece, such as a green screen, as my green screen didn't work too well with my experimentation. If I was able to I would have used a higher quality camera to take the photo so that the focus is clearer and the background is more lit up. Aesthetically my piece is different from my inspiration in many ways, but its vibe and meaning are very related.

I used a hot glue gun to attach many of the objects in this project and that allowed me to learn more about the use of a hot glue gun and tips for using a hot glue gun to attach fabric or even carpet. I also learned about the use of perspective through camera angle, using this to show the room from the perspective of a busted television that has been knocked over in the process of the chaos. I learned how to mold modeling clay and make it look like a certain object and how to better put it to use. I learned how to use my creative mind to put ordinary everyday objects together into one mixed media piece and create life out of what was once meaningless. Overall my piece was very a success and I have displayed and conveyed a meaningful project through the requirements given.

Reflection

Overall my work with this project has taught me so much and allowed me to unlock much of my creative and artistic potential. I worked very hard to get this piece together and to make it look like it does and to acquire all my materials so I am very proud of that, The final piece could go through some improvements, but that will naturally be the case considering my production value and power isn't the highest quality. As I continued on with the project, I added more and more to my creative bonfire and came across some obstacles in the way causing me to improvise and change things up a bit. None of that has stopped me however from creating my final piece and successfully.

Exhibition text

My piece is a representation of false american dream. I have purchased all of my materials and acquired some of the clothing and shoes spread around the room from toys in my house from a barbie set. My intentions were to convey a normal american family in a different perspective revealing some truth about life in America. My inspiration displayed american life, my piece displays the death of the american dream and a change in american life overall, with the overthrow of the american dream.

Research

My inspiration piece was American Gothic and this piece to me represents american values and morals and I want to use this background meaning to completely contrast my piece and show that these morals have been thrown out and the idea of the american dream has been completely changed with the rise of social media. American Gothic was a photo set up artificially, as mine was. The creator of the piece, Grant Wood, asked his sister and his dentist to pose as a father and daughter and were to represent farmers in this period, who lived in places like this and looked like this. Similarly I used multiple unrelated objects to make one final piece and have one unified meaning. The piece was a painting, specifically oil on beaver board, and represents a normal american family and their values. I also plan to use the deep background of the piece in my project as well, displaying a home. In my inspiration, the background is of a house from the outside perspective, where in my piece there will be he living room of a home to represent american life.

The inspiration for my piece was created in the early 20th century when capitalism was really beginning to become noticed and the american dream became the goal of the people, to live a stable life and have a family, and maybe even make it big and become rich. That has completely changed now and I want to show how people's perspective on american life has changed and the old values and morals of American society have been completely trashed. I plan on using both serenity and chaos in my peace to compliment and contrast each other. The empty room will remain calm and serene after the chaos that caused the storm, which adds aesthetic to the piece and is for creative purposes only.

Experimentation

Process Photos

Act Connection

My inspiration influenced the background and context of my piece with it's perspective on the American dream. I effected my set up and placement of objects around my set.

The author of my inspiration wanted to create a piece that shows American values and life. The piece was made int he 30's and these values have completely changed over time which is what I expressed in my piece.

I have concluded that American Life was much simpler in the time my inspiration was made and values were much different.

The central idea for my inspiration is american values and Simple American life.

I assumed that Grant Wood preferred this life and grew up influenced by this life and these values.
